Baltimore Farmer’s Market Opening April 3, 2011

March 31, 2011 by
Filed under Baltimore, Blog, Downtown Baltimore

The Baltimore Farmer’s Market is opening earlier than ever, and it is this weekend!

The earlier start helps Eastern Shore farmers, especially those who grow asparagus, the season of which ends in May. This also helps lettuces, radishes and beets as well, since they are cold weather crops.

Local farmers will have meats, vegetables, fruits, and organic products for sale, as well as vendors with fresh fish and other seafood. The Farmer’s Market also hosts a Bazaar nearby with crafts and handmade items too! The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts website has a lot of details, including who will be marketing each weekend.

The Baltimore Farmer’s Market is located under the JFX at Holliday and Saratoga Streets.

So come to Downtown Baltimore this Sunday from 7am-12pm and check out the 2011 Baltimore Farmer’s Market. You will be glad you did!

Baltimore County Yard Trash Pickup Resumes in April

March 29, 2011 by
Filed under Baltimore County, Blog, Towson, West Towson

Baltimore County yard trash pickup resumes in April, a welcome beginning since it ended in December.

The Baltimore County Yard Material pickup has specific items they DO pick up, and what they don’t.

They DO accept, per their website:

  • Grass
  • Leaves
  • Vines
  • Twigs
  • Shrubbery Trimmings
  • Branches & Limbs less than 3 inches in diameter and shorter than 3 feet in length

♦ Grass and leaves should be in paper or plastic lawn or leaf bags. The County prefers paper!

♦ Vines, twigs and shrubbery trimmings should be bagged or bundled, and the weight should not exceed 30 pounds per bag.

♦ Items should be placed on your yard, as it is a violation of Baltimore County Code to have it in the street. Also, do not put them in trash cans, or they will not be taken!

Baltimore County DOES NOT accept: Poison ivy, sumac, or oak, lumber, food scraps, or yard items that are not listed above.

Thank you to Baltimore County for providing us this service. Our date for pickup here in Towson begins April 13, 2011. I’ll have a bag or two out there!

Southland Hills and Towson University

Southland Hills neighborhood is right on the cusp of Towson University, near the corner of Towsontown Boulevard and Bosley Avenue.

Located right behind the Old Towson Jail, which is due to become the Towson Swim Club, the neighborhood has seen a number of changes recently.

The most recent change is that Towson University Public Safety building is due for a major addition to begin this summer — much larger than the one on the master plan in 2009.

It will add much more parking and take over where the tennis courts used to be right on Towsontown Boulevard.

The big question to the nearby homeowners is whether it will affect Southland Hills house values and their current quality of life and neighborhood. That is yet to be determined, possibly unable to do so until the new TU building is finished.

Contact me for both West Towson house values and Southland Hills house values. I live nearby!

MOM’s Timonium Store Opening Soon

March 26, 2011 by

MOM’s (Mom’s Organic Market) will be opening its’ Timonium store soon.

MOM’s is an organic and natural foods market known for low prices on these typically high priced foods.

The store is going to be in Ridgely Plaza, and 11,000 sq ft. Ridgely Plaza currently showcases a Kohl’s, Old Navy, Borders, Michael’s Craft Store and others.

One thing that I find very cool is that it will be 100% wind powered, have recycling bins for batteries (finally, a place to recycle them safely!), and be energy efficient.

Currently, Timonium has The Natural, which is a small organic store. MOM’s will be much larger, and will include things like breads from local bakeries, and hormone free locally raised meats, plus gluten free and other special sections.

I do love my grocery stores, as many noted with my posts about the Towson Safeway, and I am particularly excited about this one, because it is right behind my Timonium real estate office, and I can offer healthy, local food more easily to my son.

This is not a paid endorsement, nor an ad for the store. I am just excited about its’ opening soon, and wanted to share my excitement with others!

Hampton Elementary In Lutherville May Get Needed Addition

Hampton Elementary School on Charmuth Rd in Lutherville had a visit today from State Comptroller Peter Franchot to see the overcrowding in the school.

Hampton was built for a capacity of 307 students. The Towson Times reports that it currently has 496 enrolled students, with eight trailers currently in place, and the playground being torn down to add three additional portable classrooms.

This visit comes on the heels of Kevin Kamenetz’s visit to Stoneleigh Elementary to view the overcrowding at that school, and the push for an addition there.

The State Board of Public Works still has to vote on the Hampton Elementary addition, because it would cost about $6.5 Million in funding. The County has pledged their support, but the state has to approve their portion.

Good luck to Hampton Elementary on receiving their funding for the addition. It sounds very likely they will get what they need, which will help the students tremendously!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, Baltimore!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Baltimore!

One of my favorite Irish Blessings, (as I am sure it is for many), is one I’d like to reiterate today.

“May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.”

Whether you are Irish or not, I do hope that you are happy, safe, and able to enjoy today. Tomorrow’s weather is supposed to be beautiful again, so hopefully you can enjoy some sunshine if you weren’t able to do so today.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all!

May the luck of the Irish be with you today!
