The Homestead Tax Credit limits the amount of assessment increase that a homeowner would pay in property taxes on their principal residence.

The deadline to apply for your current house is December 31, 2012.

Currently, the cap in Baltimore County is 4%.

Even if you had the homestead tax credit on your home before, you MUST apply again because some property owners were receiving the credit on homes that were not their principal residences. For more questions and answers, the State Department of Assessments and Taxation has provided more details.

Last March, I wrote a post on how to apply for the homestead tax credit. That post will provide access to the application and learn more about the credit and why you may want to apply, plus and what your eligibility may be. You must live in the house for which the credit is to be applied.

I realized we hadn’t reapplied — so I am in the same boat. Download that application and get started now!
