When do I have to stop for a school bus in Maryland?

With schools back in session, the Maryland Department of Transportation wants to remind us the rules of the road.

When a school bus STOPS and the RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING, below are the rules from the Maryland State Police as to when motorists are required to stop, depending on the type of road you are on, and the direction in which you are driving:

1) ON A TWO LANE ROADWAY — Traffic in BOTH directions MUST stop.

2) ON A TWO LANE ROADWAY WITH CENTER TURN LANE — Traffic in ALL lanes MUST stop.

3) ON A FOUR-LANE ROADWAY with NO CENTER MEDIAN — Traffic in ALL lanes MUST stop.

4) ON A FOUR LANE ROADWAY WITH A CENTER MEDIAN SEPARATION — Only traffic going in the direction of the bus must stop. Traffic heading the opposite direction does not stop.

Please be safe and keep kids safe!
