The Zillow Consumer Housing Trends Report is a report based on research by the company.

The research focuses on buyers, sellers, and renters.

This particular section of the report is on 2025 home sellers in the U.S.

The median age of a home seller in the US in 2025 was 47. The concentration of sellers was in the middle age groups, with agents 40-49 being the highest percentage at 27%. Ages 30-39 came in at 21%, while Americans aged 50-59 came in at 15% of sellers.

The largest group of home sellers were in the South, with 41% of home sellers there. Other areas of the US came in well behind the South, with the Midwest at 22%, the West at 21%, and the Northeast at 16%.

The annual median household income among US home sellers was $95,000 to $99,999, which is higher than the national median which is approximately $80,000. The highest section of sellers came in at a median of $100,000 to $199,999, which was 34% of US home sellers, while that income median for all households was at 26%.

Sellers reported living in their home for an average of 14 years.

Fifty-seven percent of US home sellers bought a home at the same time or after selling theirs, while 42% moved to a home they already owned (meaning they did not buy it in the last year.) 49% of sellers who bought another home were upgrading to a more expensive home.

The main reason US home sellers sold in 2025 was due to a life event. The largest group was a change in household size at 51% of home sellers, followed by a new job or transfer at 37%.
